Guys... remember that winter weather has arrived! Please dress appropriately for winter when attending and traveling to and from DeMolay events. If you are driving yourself to meetings and events, drive defensively, slowly, and safely. It is preferable to arrive late than not at all! |

Famous DeMolay Quote of the Month:
"Fear is a good thing. When I played sports (18 years in the National Football League and I played baseball and basketball in high school and college), before every game the athletes would say, 'I have butterflies in my stomach.' And what that really meant was that we had a little fear. We didn’t know what to expect and that little fear kind of got our senses more awake. When I had those butterflies I thought I was really ready to go and play because my senses were in place. So fear can be a good thing."

Fran Tarkenton
(1940 - present) - A former NFL football player for 15 years who
played for the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants. He
was also a television personality as a commentator on Monday Night
Football and co-host of That's Incredible!. He also
founded Tarkenton Software, a computer programming company. As a
pro football player, Mr. Tarkenton was drafted in the third round by the
Minnesota Vikings in the 1961 NFL draft. His first game was also
the Minnesota Vikings' first game, which was against the Chicago Bears.
Mr. Tarkenton led the Vikings to the 37-13 victory against the Bears by
passing 250 yards. Tarkenton played for the Vikings from 1961 -
1966. During this time, he played as a "mobile quarterback" and
earned the name "Scramblin' Fran" due to the frequency of running around
in the backfield to avoid being sacked by the opposing team. Mr.
Tarkenton did a lot to advance the idea of a quarterback's mobility.
In 1967 he was traded to the New York Giants and played there until 1972
when he was traded back to the Vikings. He led the Vikings to
three Super Bowls in the 1970s, but the Vikings were unable to win the
NFL Championship. In his
18 NFL seasons, Tarkenton completed 3,686 of 6,467 passes for 47,003
yards and 342 touchdowns, with 266 interceptions. He also is fourth on
the all-time list of wins by a starting quarterback with 125 regular
season victories. He also used his impressive scrambling ability to rack
up 3,674 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns on 675 carries. During his
career, Tarkenton ran for a touchdown in 15 different seasons. He
retired into the television and business world after the 1978 season.
Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986, Tarkenton is widely
considered one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Vikings head
coach Bud Grant flatly called Tarkenton "the greatest quarterback who's
ever played." Tarkenton was inducted into the Georgia Sports
Hall of Fame in 1977, the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986, the College
Football Hall of Fame in 1987, and the DeMolay Hall of Fame on November
13, 1986. |
